Nike has immersed the Air Max Plus into the world of One Piece with a collaborative collection centered around Devil Fruits. Specifically, the 'Ope Ope' takes its name and inspiration from the fruit associated with Trafalgar D. Water Law, transforming the original 1998 silhouette using a Very Berry and Green Quartz palette, highlighted by spiral motifs directly linked to the fruit’s appearance.
Design Inspired by Devil Fruits
The collaboration between Nike and One Piece draws comprehensive inspiration from the various Devil Fruits found in the manga. Three versions of the Air Max Plus were created to represent specific powers: the Gomu Gomu no Mi, the Mera Mera no Mi, and the Ope Ope no Mi. The latter refers to the fruit associated with Trafalgar Law, which is capable of creating a localized space where its user can manipulate their surroundings.
To translate this powerful conceptual inspiration onto the physical Air Max Plus sneaker, Nike took steps beyond a simple colorway change. The upper was specially reworked for this collection, featuring adopted TPU structures that draw spiral motifs around the mesh panels. This distinctive motif is also featured on the synthetic mudguard, reinforcing the connection to the characteristic look of the Ope Ope no Mi.
Detailing and Foundation
The palette used in the 'Ope Ope' combines Very Berry, Green Quartz, Sport Red, Jade Aura, and Fortress. The design features deep berry tones dominating both the upper and midsole, while shades of green are notably visible on the mini-Swoosh, collar lining, and tongue. Additional One Piece details and collaboration-specific branding complete the transformation of the classic silhouette.
Crucially, beneath these new structures, the base remains true to the original Air Max Plus designed by Sean McDowell in 1998. The model retains its familiar mesh, synthetic elements, and visible Tuned Air cushioning.
